Stepping Out Of Your Comfort Zone: To Create A New
Possibility!
I'm not sure what it is but, I love to travel to
new places in my car. There is something exciting about going to new
places and, for me, driving to get there is especially
wonderful.
I love watching the landscapes change. I still
haven't figured out how the landscapes can be so vastly
different between Okalahoma and Texas. I don't get how there can be such
a dramatic difference when they are right next to each other; I love
this experience.
So, far on this trip, I've driven from Los
Angeles to San Francisco and then east, across Nevada to Salt Lake
City and then down on the 215 to the 70 east into Denver -- with
my two dogs! (Needless to say, they love to
travel also)!
Watching the different landscapes change,
eating at little dinners in places like Salina and speaking to the
locals -- is fascinating to me. And all at the same time
consulting people and conducting workshops either in person
or by phone. (I love modern technology! It really gives us so much
freedom).
My mom says that I love to travel so
much because we have pioneers on both sides of the family. Now from what
my mom says, Capt. Cook who discovered Australia the Hawaiian Islands,
is related to me. Supposedly, he is my 6th great grandfather. And on my
Dad's side of the family, we had a large part of constructing the
railway that connects the north and the south.
I do not know if it is because it is in my
genes but, I do know I love meeting new people and experiencing new
things. I love creating something out of the unknown.
For, instance, I'm here in Aspen now and I
only know a few acquaintances. I have a couple of numbers and scheduled
appointments with people. I was at
first a little nervous because it has been a while since I didn't
have at least one close friend in a place where I was
visiting.
What is exciting is seeing what will come
of it all. To produce the result that I'm looking for means that I
really have to put myself out there. I need to be out and about, follow
up on numbers I do have and going to places that I'm invited to alone --
not knowing a soul. It can be a little intimidating but, I know it
is really good for me. It completely gets me out of my comfort zone and
creates so many new possibilities.
So, I ask you...how can you step out of
your comfort zone today? I don't think you need to drive to Denver to do
this! It can be as simple as saying hello to someone first or asking a
new friend out for coffee. Maybe even taking yourself out for a drive
and going to a new little cafe for lunch and getting to know the people
seated next to you.
In a word, for me at least, this experience
I'm talking about happens whenever I am willing to do something that
leaves me out of control a little. For instance, I have a friend that
many times takes the 'Big Blue Bus' to his favorite book store. Yes, he
has a car, but he says that "It's just not the same. By taking the bus
it seems like I'm traveling somewhere and the whole thing isn't totally
within my control".
I know of someone that attends a church
outside his faith from time to time...just show up at their door and
says that he's there to visit for the morning. Another one recommends
taking a different route to work each day.
What's the common denominator here? For me,
it's about breaking up the safe and predictable routines we get our
selves into. To the degree we do this, I feel, we have, actually allowed
ourselves to "take the blinders off" for a brief shinning moment...or,
you might say, created a little tele-scope for ourselves - so as to look
back and say; "is this what I want to do with this precious life God has
given me today or has it all become safe, predictable, boring and "just
not me".
Good luck if you try this journey today!
I'll be thinking of you as I head out for yet another new town - (
and hop into a little more of the exciting and sometimes scared to
death'ness adventure of life!!).
